EducationUSA Webchat Guests: Hi! My name is Amber McKenzie and I'm from Gonzaga University in beautiful Spokane, Washington, USA! This is my 4th visit to Taiwan, and I love it here. I'm very happy to answer any questions you might have about studying in the U.S.A! Please feel free to ask me anything. I will also be at the AIEF fair this weekend, and would be happy to meet you face-to-face:).

EducationUSA Webchat Guests: I am Patricia Biddinger, Director of International Recruitment for Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. I have had the pleasure of working in international education on behalf of international students for 30 years. I work with both graduate and undergraduate students, from the time of their first inquiry about study abroad, through the admission process, and arrival and enrollment in the University. I look forward to learning more about the questions and interests of Taiwanese students through this web chat. From the start, I can tell you that you have a wonderful resource in the American Institute in Taiwan. If you would like to speak to me in person, I will be at the AIEF Education Fair at the Howard Plaza Hotel tomorrow and Sunday.

EducationUSA Webchat Guests: This is Moon Chen from AIEF. It's a pleasure to be here today chatting with you on education in US through the web. But you can visit me on Saturday and Sunday, October 13 and 14, at the American Education Fair in Howard (Foo Hua) Hotel. See you then.

Question [long live friendship between Chinese and American]: To Amber: I would like to pursue a post-doctoral program in theatre in the U.S. Can you tell me how to proceed?

Answer [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: My recommendation would be to first research the program/university you would like to attend. Many students find schools via the internet or through agencies. Next, I would contact the university directly and try to make a contact through the international student office. They can usually help you with the process of applying. Typically you need to submit the application, fee, financial documents (bank statement, financial guarantee), official transcripts, and possibly letters of recommendations. I hope that helps a little! Good luck :)!

Q [ely2]: Can you give me suggestions on how to apply for a scholarship in order to pursue my study in us university?

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: If you are a graduate student, the best way to pursue scholarships, which are awarded by the Department and School of the University you select, is to apply early. Scholarship decisions are made by a faculty committee that reviews all of the applicants together. This usually happens in February or March. This committee will select the strongest students for scholarship. It is important that you submit a complete application, including evidence of your English proficiency and the required admission test, such as the GRE, GMAT, LSAT (for law), etc. Another good thing to do as you apply is to review the website of the program you are applying to on the web. Look at the faculty biodata, which will give you a good idea about the research interests of the faculty. When you see a faculty who is doing research you are interested in, feel free to write to the professor to express your interest in his area of expertise. This will demonstrate your seriousness and competence as you seek the right program for you.

If you are an undergraduate student, be sure to take the SAT or the ACT as these examinations are typically used to identify students deserving of scholarship. Again, be sure to apply early. Some scholarship programs have deadlines as early as December 1.

AIT Moderator: Did you know that …….

EducationUSA Advising Centers provide Taiwan students and their parents with information to Make a Study Plan, Choose a U.S. School, Find Financial Aid, Apply for Admission, Get a U.S. Student Visa, and Prepare for Departure. For information: www.educationusa.org.

Q [AIT Moderator]: I would like to apply for an MBA program in 9/2008. Can you give me some suggestions on the application process? And how should I prepare for the admissions interview?

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: In applying for the MBA, you must take the GMAT examination, which is required by all good quality MBA programs. It is also important that you demonstrate English proficiency as MBA programs are quite demanding in terms of reading and writing and class participation.

You will very likely have an opportunity to describe yourself and your accomplishments through an application essay. Feel free to be very open and direct about your accomplishments -- especially if they are related to the business environment.

Finally, I would recommend that you review the program and the faculty carefully to be sure that the program is the right fit for you. Some programs are designed for students who have already had business experience, especially management. Be sure to describe any that you have had. In preparing for the admissions interview, practice what you want to say to a friend or colleague so that you will find it easier to express yourself when the interview happens. If you are able to comment on your interest in particular strengths or areas of concentration of the program, that will also strengthen your interview. And be relaxed and confident as you approach the interview. Good Luck!!

Q [Eng Mona Hegazy2]: To Amber: Can you explain what are some Effective Strategies for Applying to US Universities?

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: One effective strategy that works for students applying to the university where I work is to make a strong connection with someone in the international student programs office or the office of admissions. It's also important to have as much information as you can prior to applying. Be sure you know what materials you need in order to apply, and if you have questions, to ask:). Some materials are required for virtually all universities: Application, Application Fee, Official Transcripts (for H.S. and/or university), and Financial Documents (bank statement, financial guarantee). Other forms may be required. The more research you do prior to applying, the better! Good luck!

AIT Moderator: Question from Taiwan student:

Q [IRC ANTANANARIVO2]: To Pat: Hi,my name is Sambatra, I'm a student and I'm really intrested in pursueing my study in USA. My question is related to how to develop a strong personal essay. Is there a specific way we should follow through so as to be selected?  Would you be so kind as to give us the main points on developing a strong personal essay?

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: Hi Sambatra! The personal essay is an opportunity for you to describe your preparation for higher education study, and particularly in the discipline of most interest to you. Explain why you have chosen this field of study and your passion for becoming a professional or practitioner in your field. It is good also to describe your extra curricular activities in school and beyond school. Increasingly in U.S. higher education, there is an emphasis on "civic engagement," or what you might know as volunteerism. If you have been active in volunteer activities on behalf of your community, you should mention those activities and how you gained from the experience.

The aim of the personal essay should be to present yourself as a person, a person interested in and committed to a particular discipline, a person with compassion and a sense of humor. I hope you find this helpful, Sambatra.

Q [AIT Moderator]: To Moon: I hope to apply for Master program in education. However, my English is not good, do I have to begin with English language institute? Or can I apply directly to graduate school?

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: I suggest you try to take TOEFL and GRE first and see how your English ability is, i.e. the scores. If your scores reach the requirement of certain graduate schools, then go ahead and apply. If your scores on TOEFL and GRE are far from the required level, you may think about going to an English institute in US.

Q [AIT Moderator]: To Amber: I am interested to apply for master program in finance or business. How should I select the school? How do I apply for OPT training?

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: Selecting the school can be a difficult process. First, it's helpful for you to know exactly what you want out of the program/school, and then to research schools programs based on that criteria. It's OK for you to contact the MBA programs directly and ask where their graduates have found jobs, what kind of specializations they offer, etc... I also recommend getting recommendations from friends or acquaintances who have studied in the States. As for OPT, you would apply for that near the end of your studies. The international student advisor at the school you attend should be able to assist you with that process when the time comes! Good luck!!

AIT Moderator: Question from Taiwan student: 大部份的美國學校會要求多高的 GPA?

Answer:

Q [a_craig2001@yahoo.com.tw]: To Amber: Hi, my name is Cyrano Kuo. I'm come from Chinese culture university. Could somebody tells me the details of the USA graduate school's petitionary procedures?

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: Good question! Those procedures vary from school to school, and I recommend you contact the university directly to find out what the procedures are for that institution. You can also send your own letter asking that the decision be reconsidered. Good luck!

app. to get student visa: To Moon: when I can get app. to get my visa to go to the state to study there? please

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: You may go on the web site to find out the application regulations. It all depends on individual conditions. Generally, you should get an I-20 Form from a school which approves your application.

To Amber: I want to apply for a PhD program, do I need to contact the Department head first?

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: I recommend applying for the program first, and then possibly contacting the department head after you have submitted everything - especially if you have specific questions about the curriculum. Department heads are often very busy, and you want to make sure your questions/comments are addressed to the right person. Researching the requirements for application and finding out the best contact person would be a good first step!

Q [Iranian Audience]: Respected Sir – [To Pat]: How Iranian Students could use from scholarships or grants to pursue all of part of their higher educations in USA? Do you have especial programs for them?

Best regards

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: There are few institutions that are able to provide full scholarships or grants for the duration of your studies. However, there are many institutions that have partial scholarships. Most scholarships at the undergraduate level are awarded to students with strong academic records, with high scores on the SAT or ACT examination (only one of them, not both), and that apply early in the process -- I would suggest December 1 for admission for the Fall semester of the following year. These scholarships are generally renewable for as many as four years of undergraduate study as long as the student as continued to perform at a good level at the University -- 3.3 or above on a 4.0 scale. Many students can also find employment on campus. If you are especially strong in Math or Science for instance, you might be employed on campus as a student mentor or tutor for other students who might be struggling in the subject. There are also jobs in some departments and in the libraries of most universities. We are beginning to see the development of exchange agreements between U.S. universities and Iranian universities so be sure to ask the administration of universities in your area if they have such a program. I am also aware of some 2 2 programs where the Iranian student studies in his own country for two years and then completes the bachelors degree at the partner U.S. university or college.

At the graduate level, all scholarship decisions are made by the department and school where you plan to study. Again, apply early for admission, prepare yourself with the graduate admission test such as the GRE or GMAT, etc. and become very familiar with the details of the academic program and the faculty and their research so that you can comment on this in your application essay.

It is also permissible to contact a professor directly through e-mail if you discover a professor is doing research in an area of specialization that most interests you.

AIT Moderator: Question from Taiwan student:

Q [Victor2]: To Pat: what is the best way to get finaniacl support for graduate studies?

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: First, be sure to become familiar with the academic program that you are applying to. Read all the information about the program on the website. Then go a step further and read the bio-data on the faculty. Pay particular attention to the research interests and accomplishments of the faculty and even read one or two of their papers if they are doing research in an area that interests you.

Then, as you apply to the program, you can also send an e-mail to the professor indicating your interest in his area of research and your desire to do research in that area as well. Be sure that you have accomplished proficiency in English and have taken the graduate admission examination -- the GRE or GMAT, etc. Finally, I would recommend early application. Scholarships and grants are typically awarded to students who begin their studies in the Fall semester (August, September or October) and those planning to begin in the Spring semester have little chance for scholarship.

A strong academic record, good GRE scores, English proficiency and indications of your passion for the field of study in your essay are the best ways to secure financial support.

Q [glen2]: To Amber: How to judge if I meet the qualifications and which schools are possible to accept my application?

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: First, I would research the schools you are most interested in attending - perhaps your top 5. Next, I would find out their application requirements online (most schools have an "international student" site) with information about TOEFL requirement, application procedures, etc...

If you meet those requirements, I would then contact someone in the international admissions office and ask them what their requirement is for High School grades (there is often a formula for translating Taiwan grades to the American grading system). Once you find out, you will have a better idea of which schools you qualify for! Making connections with someone in the university is VERY helpful.

I wish you the best of luck!

AIT Moderator: Question from Taiwan student: 留美一定要考托福嗎? Answer: 最好能在留美前考托福。因為這代表你認真嘗試提高你英文的能力,這對於申請簽証有一定的影響力。 此外,從托福成績中,可知道自己英文最需要加強的是那一部份,即使你未達申請學校的標準,有托福成績也將能幫助你進入ESL課程。

Q [Irene2]: To Pat: Hello, my name is Irene. Because international students pursuing a master degree may hardly get the scholarship from school, do you think that we should still mention online that we are seeking funding from the university? Do you think that would have bad influence on our applications?

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: Hi Irene, It may be that in your particular discipline there are not a lot of scholarship monies available.

However, in the sciences, engineering, and technical fields, international students compete very favorably with domestic students for scholarships. In fact, many years ago I did a study of scholarships for international students and found that there was a higher percentage among them than domestic students receiving scholarships.

If you are interested in Business, then that is a different matter. Business degrees are extremely popular and with so many good applications for admission coming in, most Business Schools feel little need to offer scholarships.

For the business student seeking scholarship I would recommend that they consider Economics as a major where more scholarship money is available. Yes, I think it is perfectly ok to indicate that you are looking for scholarship as you explore higher education options. It would not have a bad influence on your application but instead would let you know by response if scholarships are available or not. You do not want to waste your time where no scholarships are available if you might find an institution that does offer scholarship.

Good luck to you Irene. I notice that you have good command of written English. My complements to you.

Q [a_craig2001@yahoo.com.tw]: To Moon: Hello, I'm Cyrano kuo. Could you give me some suggestions of apply to the psychological graduate school? How to choose the psychology rankings?

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: You should have completed certain psychological courses if you are not a psychological major at university. If you are, there should be no problem. Firstly, you must take English tests, such as TOEFL and GRE, and go on the school web site to see about the entrance requirements which are varied from school to school. Regarding the ranking, you may find out in US News on Graduate Schools 2007.

Q [AIT Moderator]: To Amber: What is more important in my graduate school application? Experience or grades? Should I ask someone to correct the English?

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: Great question! This is going to seem like an obvious answer, but I would say both experience and grades are important! Although, there are some students who apply for graduate programs who have little to no experience, making their grades more important in the application process. While others, more experienced students, might have a lot of work experience, but had poor grades in college.

Graduate Departments often take everything into account, including GRE, MAT, or GMAT scores, as well as letters of recommendations, grades, work experience, student's statement of purpose, etc...

Once they have a good idea about the student and his/her goals, they can make a decision. It wouldn't hurt to have someone review your submission to check for language mistakes/errors.

Good luck!

AIT Moderator: Question5:

Q [AIT Moderator]: To Pat: Can you give me some suggestions on the best questions to ask and look for at an education fair?

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: Look for institutions that offer the degree programs that most interest you. Of course I should say that today there are many new degree programs and sometimes different universities have a different name for the same major field of study. So ask the representative about your major even if you do not see it listed among their offerings. Also ask about scholarships and cost of study at the University and living in the community or on campus. If you are an undergraduate, you will want to know what the campus environment is like. For example, many US colleges and universities have developed "Freshman Year Experience" programs which emphasize special support for beginning students.

You will want to know if there is a good library and what the faculty student ratio is. Smaller classes give you more opportunity to participate in classroom discussions and this kind of participation strengthens your learning. You may have a preference for a studying in an urban environment so you should know that many fine universities are located in small towns in the U.S. while of course there are also many fine universities in cities.

I think you will want to know if the campus is big or small. Some of the best educational opportunities for undergraduates are in small liberal arts colleges. These colleges tend to specialize in teaching and student support.

Generally, all of their professors are PhD's and they have a great passion for teaching and wonderful concern for their students. Other students are more stimulated by the big campus environment.

Q [Student_Participant]: To Amber: i'd like to know if it is possible to get Visa to USA to study english there ? i am in Saudi Arabia

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: Yes, definitely!! Our school has several Saudi Arabian students who study English first, and then go on to get their undergraduate degree. Most of those students are sponsored by their Ministry of Higher Education. It can sometimes take several weeks for students in Saudi Arabia to get a visa. I recommend applying to a program early, getting the I-20, and making the visa appointment at least three to six months prior to your anticipated arrival date in the U.S. Ramadan Mubarak! (although, I understand Eid is here - Enjoy:). Take care!

efwsp@msn.com: To Moon: 您好~我有在工作,並修讀空中大學,被當的科目(被當兩科58.59),並不能在一年內重修,以至於被拉低分數,(因學校制度關係),GPA那該如何是好?我修讀的過程是三年內完成四年大學的學分,那可以就原因告知給學校?是否通融?

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: You may try, but I am not sure whether you can win sympathy from the school. Well, there is nothing to lose to have a try. In my personal opinion, completing 4-year credits in three years is not a good and reasonable excuse. You are responsible for doing things beyond your ability. Right?

AIT Moderator: Question from Taiwan student:

Q [shaniaia@tp.edu.tw]: To Amber: 請問碩士學位:M.A.和M.Ed的差別! Can you please explain the difference between M.A. and M.Ed. degree?

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: That's a difficult question, but a good one! Universities and colleges offer various types of Master of Arts degrees. Some schools may call their degree an M.A., others may call it an M.Ed. There is not a big distinction between the two as far as the title (they are both Master's degrees), but what you'll want to do is make a comparison between the M.A. and the M.Ed. program of study by researching the degrees online and asking questions about what each degree offers. Researching the programs and making an informed decision of which one is best for you is the best advice I can give. Go for it:)!

Q [ihan-ihan@hotmail.com]: To Pat: 。

I am currently in my first year of university study in Taiwan. I plan to go to the U.S. for Master then Ph.D. study, can you give some suggestion on how to effectively prepare for going abroad? Getting a full scholarship?

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: First I advise that you study very hard at your university in Taiwan and earn top marks. If it is possible, become involved in some research while you are still an undergraduate. Begin early to prepare for the graduate admission test -- the GRE or GMAT or LSAT (law), etc. You can learn about these examinations on line where they even have sample questions or practice tests.

Read in English often to improve your reading comprehension and take advantage of all opportunities to improve your other skills in English. It would also be helpful to you to periodically visit the Educational Advising Center in your city or town, such as the American Institute in Taiwan. They have libraries of information so you can begin to become familiar with different colleges and universities in the U.S.

American universities also appreciate seeing student applicants who have been active on their campus in extra curricular activities, in pursuing experiential learning in their chosen field, and even doing some research in the discipline. Then plan to apply early if you wish to be considered for scholarship.

Study the websites of universities that interest you, including the backgrounds and research interests of the faculty. When you identify a program that really interests you, having read the work of some of the professors will demonstrate your seriousness as a student and your preparedness for study in their program.

Q [AIT Moderator]: Question from Taiwan student:

Q [AIT Moderator]: To Moon: Can you give me some advice -- would Los Angeles or San Francisco or Australia be a better destination for my first overseas study experience?

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: I have been living in Los Angeles for 30 years, but I strongly suggest you go to San Francisco. Top schools, such as Stanford University and UC Berkeley, are not far from the city. You would love San Francisco, I am sure.

Q [Gloria_Gao1981]: To Pat: I am Gloria and graduated from Xi'an International Studies University in the PRC in 2004. I got the adult education from Xi'an International Studies University and got the university degree. I passed the certificate TEM8(Test for English Majors Band 8) that is the highest certificate for English majors. I am good at English communication skills and did the good achievement in the university. Besides that, my minor is German and I got high scores in the exam. I would like to further my study in USA and I checked a lot of requirements from each universities and seems I couldn't apply due to my adult education experience. So could you please offer me some suggestions? I will be very appreciated if you can send me a feedback soon! Thank you very much!

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: Hi Gloria! I am surprised that you are having difficulty because of your adult education experience. I am not familiar with that being a problem. If you are interested in continuing in the field of adult education, I know that there are masters and doctorates in that field in some universities in the U.S. You might want to check www.petersons.com to do a search for universities that offer that major.

If you are thinking of changing your major to a new field, this might present a problem. For instance, if you want to study in a scientific or technical field at the graduate level, the institutions may feel that your background in adult education does not sufficiently prepare you for graduate study. In some cases, when students wish to change majors, the graduate department will give them a semester or two of course work at the senior undergraduate level and offer admission if they perform well in those courses.

It seems that you are very strong in languages as I can see that you write well in English and you have also received high marks for your study in the German language. Have you considered linguistics as a field of study? The only other thing I can think of that may be presenting some difficulty for you is that the Xi'an International Studies University may not be recognized by the Ministry of Education in China. Is that the case?

Finally, I would say that the spectrum of higher education institutions in the U.S. is very large and that there surely is a college or university that would accept your application for admission. I hope this is helpful information for you Gloria.

Q [AIT Moderator]: To Amber: Does U.S. universities have limits on number of students from one country?

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: Another great question! That would depend on the university and/or the program you're applying to. Some universities might set limits in a particular program, and other don't. In my university, we do not limit the number of undergraduate students admitted from one country, but in our ESL program, we try not to exceed 50% of enrollment from one language group. I would say MOST universities do not set limits in their Undergrad and Grad schools:). I hope this helps!

Q [Ramone]: To Pat: Hello, my name is Ramone Williams from Kingston, Jamaica who interested in attending college in Fall 2008. I will be taking the SAT in December and the SAT Subject Tests in January! I would major in Computer Engineering and/or Computer Science. If I can find a double major offered then fine. But so far the selection of colleges have been very difficult. Can you give me some advice?

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: There are many institutions that offer Computer Engineering and Computer Science. If you are planning to study at the undergraduate level it should not be a problem to find a school that would permit you to do a double major. However, I must admit that the two majors you are interested in are both very demanding programs. Maybe the departments think that this is not possible. I know that in typical engineering programs, the student is expected to take 15 credit hours each semester. That leaves little time for a second major. However, if you are determined and willing to work very hard, it should be possible. You may have to take some courses during the summer or extend your studies by a semester of two to do both. You might try doing a search on www.petersons.com to help you identify schools that offer computer engineering. I know of a school that calls this major computer and electrical engineering. Most schools that offer computer engineering would also offer computer science. Perhaps you are looking at a smaller school that does not offer engineering. So you may want to begin with a search for engineering schools. I am sorry you are having difficulty locating an appropriate school and hope this information is helpful to you.

Comment [AIT Moderator]: To Pat: Is it better to try a short-term ESL program in the U.S. before deciding to apply for graduate school? Can I transfer the credits later?

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: If you are not comfortable with your English, then a short-term ESL program will help you to polish your proficiency.

However, ESL classes do not give credit for academic programs so you will not be able to transfer ESL credits for any program and certainly not for a graduate program. There are many colleges and universities that offer ESL courses so that you would not have to change schools. Rather, in many cases, when you first prepare for enrollment, the university or college will give you an English proficiency test that will determine if you are ready for full-time academic study. If that test reveals that you have some deficiency, let's say in writing or listening skills, they will recommend a course or two which you can take while at the same time you begin your academic or degree program. Of course, you will take fewer academic courses while you continue to improve your English. Good question! Good luck to you.

Q [efwsp@msn.com]: To Amber: GPA3.0..ibt210 GMAT700~I feel not good..how to select for schools ? I want to major in business.such as ...UC Irvine?UC Davis?University of North Texas?University of Texas-Arlington?University of Missouri-Kansas City?Universityof Missouri-St. Louis?Purdue University?U. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign?CUNY-Baruch College

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: Wow, so many options for you to choose from! That is a difficult decision, and one that you want to think about carefully. There are so many FANTASTIC schools to choose from in the U.S. it is often difficult finding the right one! My advice is to think carefully about the type of school you're looking for: Big state school, small private school, number of international students, their business program, opportunities for internships, etc... You can research this online - and also get recommendations from friends/acquaintances who have also studied in the U.S. The other important consideration is what physical environment you're looking for: big city, small town, rural, mountains, ocean, as well as the weather: 4 seasons, hot year round, etc... This can have a big impact on your happiness with a school! Once you have decided the type school you want and an ideal location, you can start applying! I'm sure you'll make the decision that's best for you - good luck!

Q [pandasjj2]: To Pat: Dear Sir, this is Elisa. I'm a Chinese from Beijing. Right now I am M.A student in a U.S university in New York City. I'm going to apply for a Ph.D program for fall 2009 because I'll be graduating in summer that year. Here are my questions: (1) Can you give me some suggestions on how to make the best use of my study experience in the U.S. in order to get a better result? (2)Since I'll finish my Master degree program in the U.S, which means my entire MA studies are taught in English, do I still need to submit my TOEFL score as an application requirement? If so, I'll take an TOEFL test because my previous on has expired already (3) To what extent do you think I should keep in touch with the professors of my applying universities? Any other suggestions on how to demostrate my academic capacity to them besides my writing sample, research proposal, recommendation letter and personal statement? THANK YOU VERY MUCH!Hope you have a nice day!

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: Dear Elisa, It seems to me that you are very well prepared for continuing your education at the doctoral level. With your U.S. master's degree you will not need to retake a TOEFL examination. To make best use of your graduate study, be involved with research, as this is of great interest to PhD programs. I believe it is a very good idea to stay in touch with the professors in the schools you plan to apply to. Read their reserach so that you can make informed messages to them. And I think you have covered all the items that are important to doctoral applicants. Good luck to you.

Q [ava5172001@yahoo.com.tw]: To Pat: I am very interested in studying the Master Degree in America, but I don't have enough fees to study there. Therefore, I plan to apply for the state universities. Can you give some suggestions for the students who want to apply for the state universities but have not much expenses.

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: My first recommendation to you is to become very familiar with the degree programs that interest you by reading the details on the web site. Also read the bio-data of the faculty and look up some of their research so that you can correspond with those directly who are doing research in your area of interest. If you are a very strong student, you should not discount the private universities; even though they are more expensive, they often also have more financial assistance and they provide this to bright students. Of course the state or public universities are often very strong and can also support your studies if you are a good student, with good English skills, and good graduate admission test results. Good luck to you.

C [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: I would like to take this opportunity to say a few words about International American Education Foundation. AIEF provides free service to those planning to study in US, helping locate proper schools and process application documents. There are seminars on Wednesdays and Fridays for the public. AIEF organizes twice a year the American Education Fair in March and October respectively. On Saturday and Sunday, October 13 and 14, American Education Fair will be held at Howard (Foo Hua) Hotel. You are welcome to visit.

AIT Moderator: One last question....

Q [bucha2@gmail.com]: To Pat: Hi, I am a student from Taiwan who's applting for MA TESOL program in the US. I aim for applying financial aids such as tuition waiver or TA opportunities from the programs. My TOEFL and GPA look good(iBT:112, 3.7), however, the GRE score is about 1100~1200 only. Based on your experience, do you think I can get a chance for financial aids?

A [EducationUSA Webchat Guests]: Your scores on the iBT are outstanding and your score on the GRE is good. I think the major obstacle is that many TESOL programs do not offer financial assistance. However, I do know that there are some programs that offer teaching assistantships, though generally only in the second year of study. Another thing that you might explore is a research or grading assistantship. Take a careful look at the research that is being done by faculty in the programs that interest you. Read some of the research papers of the faculty and write to the faculty who are involved in research that interests you. If you can say that you are familiar with their research, you will quite possibly create a good relationship with that faculty member, who may then support your request for assistance. You might also inquire about the possibility of teaching English in a private program in the community or a non-profit organization that, for instance, is working with immigrant communities in helping them to learn English.

EducationUSA Webchat Guests: Thank you so much for your fantastic questions. It was very fun chatting with you, and I wish you all the best of luck in accomplishing your future educational goals in the U.S. Please feel free to visit the Gonzaga University booth this Saturday and Sunday at the AIEF fair in the Howard Plaza Hotel! I will be providing information about our innovative MA/TESL degree, as well as our Academic ESL program! I look forward to meeting you soon. Have a great weekend:)

Q [ava5172001@yahoo.com.tw]: To Amber: Can you give some suggestions to me about studying language and also about applying for business Master courses in the America state universities?

EducationUSA Webchat Guests: It is important that you find a language program that suits your needs. Some programs are very intensive and academically focused, while others are less academic, and may focus mainly on listening/speaking. If you are interested in learning English for the purpose of attending an MBA program, you will require a more intensive, academic ESL program. Many universities in the U.S. have academic ESL programs that offer a conditional admittance to the undergrad and/or graduate program offered by the university. You may want to research MBA programs and ESL programs online and also get references from friends/acquaintances. As far as applying for an MBA program, be sure you take the GMAT or GRE (depending on the program requirements), and submit all required materials and be as thorough as possible:). Good luck!!
