The Environmental Protection Agency, established 1970

Mission: To protect human health and the environment.

Staff: 17,000 employees

Duties: The agency develops and enforces regulations to protect and improve the environment, administers grants to support environmental programs, studies environmental issues and educates the public on environmental issues.

History: The EPA was established as an independent agency in December 1970 in response to widespread concerns about environmental degradation and pollution.

International Commitments: The agency’s Office of International Affairs works to reduce transnational pollution and promote sound international environmental governance.

Fun fact: At the first “Earth Day” on April 22, 1970, some 20 million peaceful protestors demonstrated for more environmental stewardship. Earth Day now is observed annually in the United States with a variety of “Earth-friendly” activities. (See “What is Earth Day?”)
