Administrator Lisa Jackson

Lisa Jackson was sworn in on January 22, 2009, as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. Jackson oversaw New Jersey’s environmental protection office and served as the chief of staff to the state’s governor. Jackson is also a chemical engineer.

Her Senate confirmation hearing was held January 14, 2009. The text of Jackson’s prepared testimony is available on the Committee on Environment and Public Works Web site.

The Environmental Protection Agency, established 1970

Mission: To protect human health and the environment.

Staff: 17,000 employees

Duties: The agency develops and enforces regulations to protect and improve the environment, administers grants to support environmental programs, studies environmental issues and educates the public on environmental issues.

History: The EPA was established as an independent agency in December 1970 in response to widespread concerns about environmental degradation and pollution.

International Commitments: The agency’s Office of International Affairs works to reduce transnational pollution and promote sound international environmental governance.

Fun fact: At the first “Earth Day” on April 22, 1970, some 20 million peaceful protestors demonstrated for more environmental stewardship. Earth Day now is observed annually in the United States with a variety of “Earth-friendly” activities. (See “What is Earth Day?”)
