STATEMENT BY TOM CASEY, DEPUTY SPOKESMAN
Goma Peace Agreement Implementation
The United States congratulates the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo and all parties to the Goma Peace Agreement on the official start of its implementation phase. We welcome the launch of a joint technical commission on peace, security, and reconstruction of North Kivu as a significant step toward consolidating peace, extending state authority, ending the involuntary displacement of civilians, and curbing human rights abuses in eastern Congo. We stand with the Congolese people in our support for lasting peace.
