Dr. Martin Cooper, as director of research and development at Motorola, Inc., is credited with inventing the technology of the modern mobile phone. He placed the first mobile phone call on April 3, 1973 in New York City. But mobile phones didn’t gain common usage in the United States until the early 1980s.
